The RPG & DB2 Summit - Fall 2008

In late October, 135 IBM i development professionals packed plenty of energy and enthusiasm and headed off to Las Vegas for several days of intensive learning at the RPG & DB2 Summit.

We knew it would be a fun week as soon as we started taking pictures for the conference badges. Boring RPG developers? Not in this group! Check out the photo gallery for a pictorial tour of the week's events, including our group photo.

Summit hosts Susan Gantner, Jon Paris, Paul Tuohy and Skip Marchesani welcomed their guests on Monday evening with a reception and banquet, where door prizes, banter and (bad) jokes flowed freely.

With 50 technical sessions and four in-depth pre-conference workshops, attendees absorbed an incredible amount of information from the leading authorities in RPG/DB2 development. SQL topics stole the show, closely followed by modern RPG coding techniques.

IBM's Barbara Morris (chief architect for RPG), Alison Butterill (strategic direction for IBM i development tools) and Mike Cain (senior technical member of the DB2 for IBM i team) shared their unique insights and personal observations regarding RPG and DB2 during Tuesday morning's Keynote panel discussion. Only those who attended know which i expert is the trained sniper, which is the classical cellist and which is the tai chi practitioner and evangelist.

When not in sessions, attendees, gurus and vendors relaxed together over meals, sharing ideas and stories. They discussed development tools at Showcase booths and perused the conference bookstore, which featured the debut of the hot new book The Remote System Explorer: Modern Developer Tools for the System i by Don Yantzi and Nazmin Haji, as well as popular favorites such as The Programmer's Guide to iSeries Navigator by Paul Tuohy.

Many thanks to RPG & DB2 Summit media sponsors, IBM Systems Magazine and System i Network, our vendor sponsors, and guest speakers Scott Klement, Kent Milligan, Bruce Vining, Aaron Bartell, Barbara Morris, Alison Butterill and Mike Cain. Each and every one helped to make this Summit an event to remember.

Plans are already underway for the next RPG & DB2 Summit. Be sure to sign up for email alerts to get the latest news on upcoming events!
