The RPG & DB2 Summit - Fall 2013

The Sofitel in Minneapolis buzzed with energy as 170 IBM i developers, gurus and ISVs convened for the 14th RPG & DB2 Summit. A record number of attendees jumped right into this sold-out conference on Monday with Headstart courses in RSE, PHP and SQL. Take a photo tour of this Summit here

During opening session, the mere mention of TR7's "completely Free-Form RPG" elicited a collective "ooooooooo" from the audience. Barbara Morris herself was onsite to fill in the details of /Free and other new RPG enhancements in her session "What's New in RPG."

For many of us, though, the most thrilling part of the Summit was seeing Scott Klement walk into his sessions. Go Scott!

Keynote speaker Ian Jarman sharpened our focus on just why the IBM i rocks business applications. His work on IBM i's 25th anniversary celebration created memorable vignettes that illustrate the platform's strengths. Reliability = A Mongolian pony on the Silk Road. Only a history buff like Ian could come up with something as smart as that! He left us with posters, slides and speaker notes on those stories to help us look smart and spread the word to others in our organizations.

And did you know that the system that became the AS/400 was not originally based on the S/38's architecture? Good job they switched - the original proposal would never have lasted 25 years!

Mike Pavlak stepped in for Mike Cain on Wednesday afternoon to lead the popular i Advocate Tutorial and Discussion. Rule #1: No Whining! See our updated library of free i Advocate Resources here.

Between sessions we networked with each other, the speakers and select ISVs. We learned about useful ISV tools, collected IBM i vignette cards and won t-shirts honoring the strengths of our favorite platform. The ISVs were generous with prize drawings, and Craig couldn't be happier about the "must be present to win" rule! But when it's your colleague who lost out? Well... WE all got a laugh out of it!
