The RPG & DB2 Summit - Spring 2016

Dallas greeted Summiteers with a lovely day on Monday, March 21. Many of us got to work bright and early to squeeze in 8 hours of in-depth, hands-on SQL, RDi or PHP before dinner. (The SQL and RDi workshops sold out!)

By Tuesday morning, everyone had arrived and we jumped eagerly into Summit sessions. Paul's Embedded SQL and Jon's Advanced Data Structures classes took the prize for the best attended sessions.

Check out these photo highlights of the Summit.

During the Keynote address, delegates from as far away as Portugal and Poland listened intently as IBM's Ian Jarman shared recent research as well as his own insights into development trends on the IBM i. Yes, lots of new development is happening on the IBM i! Yes, mobile is a big deal for us! And yes, RPG is still the most used language for new development.

When we all got together for our group photo, somebody got called out for not wearing his Summit fleece! (Not naming names, Jon…)

Facing a shortage of RPG skills? Mentoring younger developers works! In a lively iAdvocate discussion facilitated by Mike Cain, Steve and others shared their successes.

The trick? No columns! You must introduce other developers to RPG using free format and a modern editor like RDi. They will quickly embrace RPG for its efficiency in writing business logic. And they will love the IBM i's reliability.

A big thank you to each and every Millennial in attendance. You are RPG's future! And hats off to "Super Alumni" Marvin, Nicole and Tim for having attended 5+ Summit events.

Ted Holt left us smiling and humming during the last session on Thursday after leading us in his latest rendition of the Summit Song. See the video here. New friends exchanged contact info and hugged goodbye while others made final notes on techniques to try out as soon as they got home.

As always, the exceptional experts who round out the Summit family deserve kudos for its success: Scott Klement, Mike Cain, Tom McKinley, Barbara Morris, Aaron Bartell, Mike Pavlak, Ted Holt, Doug Mack and, of course, Ian Jarman. Our thanks.
