The RPG & DB2 Summit - Spring 2017

Orlando greeted us with sunshine on March 20, 2017 to kick off one of our most international RPG & DB2 Summit events yet.

Attendees flew in from Portugal, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada and across the US to learn the latest techniques for IBM i development. 60% arrived a day early for a deep dive into a single topic — SQL, PHP, RSE/RDi or Service Programs — with 8 hours of focused instruction and hands-on labs.

Take a captioned photo tour of the entire conference here.

Initially a politely quiet group of eager learners, individuals soon relaxed and got to know one another. By dinner Tuesday evening, everyone was sharing stories, amusing each other by making funny faces with their drink coasters, and laughing at Paul and Jon's (bad) jokes during the prize drawings.

We've never seen Susan and Alison sneer at our guests like that!

At Opening Session we honored six new Super-Alumni — Philip Bourne, Daniel Clausing, Bjorn Eklund, Scott Holmbeck, Wade Reid and Johannes Reitinger — as well as our 7x Super-Alumni Ake Olsson.

IBM i Offering Manager Alison Butterill shared the IBM i roadmap with us, promising new iOS releases and support extending out to at least 2026. As Watson's brother, IBM i is ready and waiting for us to begin leveraging The Age of Digital Transformation.

The remainder of the conference focused on tips and techniques that will help all of us do just that. We learned ways to modernize our code, our UIs, our use of data, our tools. Several select IBM i ISVs demonstrated how their tools contribute to the IBM i ecosystem by helping us achieve our development goals more efficiently.

By Thursday afternoon we were all happily exhausted, minds filled to bursting with new ideas. Yet Ted Holt still had the energy to play his ukulele and lead us in his own RPG version of The Beatles' classic hit, Let It Be.

Thanks to Ted, to Mike Cain for doing double-duty in the DB2 track, and to Scott Klement, Barbara Morris, Mike Pavlak, Alan Seiden, Liam Allan, Doug Mack and Alison Butterill for sharing their expertise with all of us once again.
