Modernization Alive and Well
Modernization on IBM i is alive and well.
Been a bit since I last posted anything. Certainly not because there is nothing going on! Quite the opposite. The past several months have been very busy. The development team has been heads down working on all sorts of new updates and enhancements. I have been spending a great deal of time having modernization discussions with our IBM i customers in addition to speaking at several of the largest IBM i conferences of the year. Been an exciting yet busy time for sure. Time to get back to covering all the exciting new enhancements we have been working on.
First, want to talk a minute about the latest announcement. On April 28 during the Common conference in Anaheim CA, the IBM i 7.2 TR2 and IBM i 7.1 TR10 announcement details were released to the public. During the Common conference many of these new items were covered during the opening session. Lots of exciting new things for sure. I am planning on writing several Blog posts over the next 6 or so weeks as these different items actually reach General Availability. No, not everything in the announce will be delivered on the same date. There is at least one item that has already been released (actually in Feb before the Announce Letter Date!!) Other items will reach GA next week, others on the ‘real’ TR GA date and still s few more not until the end of June. For the summary details on the announcement you could read through the actual announcement letter, of course that is assuming that you are OK with weeding your way through all the extra legal junk that is included in one of those things. OR, what I would recommend is to take a look at the TR Enhancements page out in DeveloperWorks – http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/ibmi/techupdates/i72
Next – Modernization RedBook update. Been almost a year now since ‘Modernizing IBMi Application from the Database up to the User Interface and Everything in Between’ was released. Thanks to many of you, I would very much consider this book an overwhelming success. At last check (about a month ago now) we were well over 10K in downloads!! This is one of the most downloaded books in the RedBook system. I have talked to many customers that are looking to undertake modernization projects as a result of hearing about and downloading this book. This book can be downloaded at – http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248185.html
The companion guide that was released last fall, ‘Tool and Solutions for Modernizing your IBM i Applications’ has also been doing well. This is the book that covers many of our ISV solutions that provide tooling to help you with the modernization process. This book in the short few months it’s been out has seen over 2,500 downloads. This Redbook can be found at –
This week I am off to France to cover modernization with the IBM i event in Paris and then on Thursday I will be speaking about Modernization (what else…) at an event sponsored by Common Europe and ARCAD Software in Gothenburg Sweden. Stay tuned for more updates!!
